Travels around Uppsala
For those to like to go on excursions but still stay close to home Uppsala could hardly be better.
Uppsala has a great amount day trips available for those who like hiking. Near Uppsala runs the Upplands Leden (The Uppland Trail), one of Swedens many established long walks, this one account for 500km long hiking divided up on 31 stages within 3 areas, several of them with their own sections. The first (eastern) area’s first stage starts in Uppsala att Studenternas IP and takes you out to Sunnersta on a journey of 11.5km and the area ends in Långhåll att the neighboring Gästriklandsleden after almost 250km of hiking trails.
This trail is preserved dutifully by the Upplandsstiftelsen but at several times there can be complications with various stages of the walk these are usually advertised about here and can be of great assistance if one wants to attempt the trial in full or just stages of it.
One of my favorite sections is near the Gimo Damm, called the Gimo damm walk. It is in stage 11 of area 1. The total length of the walk is 12km and is a looping hike around the damm. The reasons I like this walk is that its an easy walk of just the right length for a day trip out form Uppsala. It encircles a lake which gives a varrying landscape and availability of fauna and flora compared to other sections, and I personally enjoy walking around lakes and their landscapes.
My favorite time to walk around this lake is in August as I can then combine it with my interest of mushroom picking, especially that of the Kantarell which makes a lovely toast or a sauce for most meats.
For walking around this lake I would suggest bringing some kind of light lunch, several snacks and a few liters of water and some coffee for those times you want to stop and enjoy the nature around the lake.
