Exploring Uppsala County
Having a quick study break? Then this is for you!
Visit the historical sites, museums and university buildings of Uppsala, like Carolina Rediviva, which is Sweden’s largest library building, or Uppsala Cathedral, Uppsala Castle, Gustavianum Museum, the University’s botanical garden, the Linnaeus Garden, which is also oldest in the country. You can also go to the tropical greenhouse located near the same botanical garden (open 9-16).
Visit Gamla Uppsala and explore. It is convenient to take the no. 2 bus with UL, and even close enough to bike!
Try going to Hågadalen-Nåsten Nature Reserve which is a lovely place to walk, run, bike or ski (during the winter) and is within reach from Uppsala. Hågadalen with the Håga river is an accessible valley that stretches north from Hågahögen to Ekoln lake in the south. The forest of Nåsten has trekking, cycling and skiing routes.
Day Trips from Uppsala
No classes today? Let’s explore the area!
How about traveling to Sigtuna, the oldest city in Sweden? With its charming main street and picturesque walk by lake Mälaren, you are sure to enjoy this jaunt South.
Spend a day (or even a weekend!) in Sweden’s capital. It is easy to get to Stockholm from Uppsala via both the SL commuter train and the SJ intercity train, and both are fast and reasonably affordable (with the student discount from your Mecenat card). In Stockholm you have access to countless museums, performances, shops, restaurants and experiences.
Where can you go during a Weekend?
Feel like a vacation, but don’t feel like finding your passport? Try an in-country getaway!
Weekend getaway in an Östhammar cabin house. It is possible to find cabins to rent for around 1500 SEK for 6 people. Try finding a cabin which is just beside the lake and go hiking. If you are lucky you can find a cottage with fire place inside. So cosy!
Rent a car with friends and drive to Höga Kusten.
Take a ferry to the island of Gotland, and explore the medieval city of Visby (with the best preserved town wall in northern Europe) or Fårö, which, as its name suggests, is mostly populated by sheep. On Gotland you can also find Campus Gotland, another campus of Uppsala University.
Explore the West coast of Sweden by travelling to Gothenburg (Göteborg)! The salt breeze mixed with the big city vibe is perfect for a weekend away. City tips: take a boat to the islands, visit Liseberg, try a river tour to get the vibe of the city.
Enjoy Sweden’s other big cities: Malmö, Stockholm, Lund (another vibrant student city), and Örebro. All can be reached using SJ trains.
