With some 40,000 students and 500 years of history, Uppsala University has a lot to offer. Not only are there university buildings, but there are museums, parks, and libraries to explore! Welcome.

Campus Buildings

There are 395,000 square metres of faculty floor at Uppsala University, split between 9 faculties and nearly 50 departements. You don’t need to study the subject specific to that building in order to explore it’s study rooms, libraries and other facilities.

The University hosts many events such as tours, guest lectures and workshops. Make the most of what the university has to offer, and explore the events available.

GUSTAVIANUM

The Gustavianum is the University’s own museum, which displays not only Ancient Egyptian, Ancient Greek and Viking Era artefacts, but also a curated collection of the University’s own treasures collected since its foundation in 1477. The building is the original university building in Uppsala, and has a reconstructed medical auditorium modelled after the original one that was built and used there during the late 17th century. Discover the history of the nations and some of the most notable professors and students from Uppsala University, including Carl von Linné and Anders Celsius.

NOTE: The Gustavianum will be closed on September 29th for reconstruction, and is expected to re-open in 2021.

The University’s own Botanical Garden also houses the Linneanum, a 200-year-old orangery, and a Tropical Greenhouse, as well as an expansive garden with a fountain. Here you can see and learn about the over 8000 plants in the University’s collection. The park is free for visitors, the Linneanum has an entrance fee for certain exhibitions, and the Tropical Greenhouse has an entrance fee of 40 SEK for adults, and is free for ages 0-17.

THE LINNEAUS GARDEN

This charming garden was the own garden of Carl von Linné, where in the 18th century he taught his students botany. The house in the garden was Linné’s home during this time , an d is now the Linneaus Museum, run by the Swedish Botanical Society. During normal opening hours, the entrance fee for both the garden and the museum is 80 SEK for adults, and free of charge for ages 0-17 (may very depending on current exhibitions). After 5 PM, entry to the garden is free of charge.

NOTE: A valid, full-price entry ticket to Linneaus Hammarby is also valid as an entry ticket to The Linneaus Garden.

LINNAEUS HAMMARBY

Linnaeus Hammarby was the summer residence of world-renowned botanist, Carl von Linné, and is now a museum. The estate was purchased by Linné in 1758 and the main house was built in 1762. The garden and museum are open May - September. The entrance fee for adults is 80 SEK and includes a guided tour of the museum (there are 4 per day, and groups of 10 or more must book a private tour), those aged 0-17 enter free of charge. Entrance to the garden is free of charge after 5 PM.

NOTE: A valid, full-price entry ticket to The Linnaeus Garden is also valid as an entry ticket to Linnaeus Hammarby.

Libraries

Carolina Rediviva is the main university library, but there are also 10 subject libraries in Uppsala, as well as nation libraries, which are stocked with course literature for a range of subjects. There are study spaces available in most nation libraries and in all of the library facilities.

The subject libraries (on the map below) include: The Karin Boye Library, Blåsenhus Library, Dag Hammarskjöld and Law Library, Library for Economic Sciences, Medical Library, Bio-Medical Library, Geological Library, Ångström Library, Earth Sciences Library, and Biology Library. These have books per pertinent to the subjects studied at each of these campuses, but it is possible to order a book from a different subject library to the one at your campus.
