Dear International Students,

Welcome to Sweden and Uppsala University. Of course, the student life in Uppsala is not only about studying at the oldest and finest University in the Nordic countries, but also about meeting new people and having a great time. We at Stockholm nation welcome you to our nation and hope that you are ready to experience a year full of great student events within Stockholm nation.

Stockholm nation was established by students in 1649, with the purpose to organize the social life among students with the same home region – Stockholm. Today, the nation has grown to be one of the largest nations in Sweden with over 6000 members. The characterization of Stockholm nation is influenced by its members, traditions and cultural heritage. The perfect atmosphere for your student life.

EVENTS

Stockholm nation has loads of events! For example there will be the fall and spring Ball, several gasques (fancy dinners), club nights, pubs and much more. The nation is open every day of the week if you just want to stop by during the day to meet people, have lunch, study in our library or have a cup of coffee at our café and “fika” (have a cup coffee with some sweets. This will become one word of your everyday vocabulary in Uppsala).

Stockholm nation has many activity groups that you as an international are more than welcome to join. Examples are our theatre, choir and several sports activities. If you want to be more involved in the nation life, it is always much appreciated if you “nisse”. This means that you help out during the breakfast, lunch, work in the kitchen on Saturdays, serve at dinners or help out during club nights.

RECCEVECKAN

The first month, we will introduce you to your new student life in Uppsala, also called “recceveckan”. One of the first events at Stockholm nation not to miss out on will be “Reccemottagning”, an evening which gives you the opportunity to know more about the nation and meet both other international and Swedish students. Another event is the ”Pre-party” where new students are welcome to the nation before the club opens where we play beer-pong and have a good time. Afterwards we continue the night at our own club. The final event for our newcomers is the “Reccegasque” a nice formal dinner which ends with an unforgettable party.

INTERNATIONAL SECRETARIES

For newly arrived international students it may be confusing with all these new events, students, Swedish words and traditions. Therefore, Stockholm nation has two International Secretaries to guide you so that you will experience a great year here in Uppsala. Some great tips to get started is to know that every Thursday night, is the night when we party and the nation turns into a club with several bars and dance floors filled with happy students. Another thing not to miss is “fika” at the nation on all week days and Saturdays. For you to be sure not to miss out on anything, remember to read our newsletter, visit our Facebook page and look at the event schedule which is constantly updated at: stockholmsnation.se At the Facebook page “International Students at Stockholm Nation”, the International Secretaries will inform you about the nation’s activities and help you with all kinds of problems that may occur. They will also try to organize dinners, trips to nearby villages, and of course trips to Stockholm, a perfect way to interact with Swedes and learn more about new cultures. For the moment we are in need of a new international secretary.
